I'm looking for something nicely neutral (I listen to a lot of varied rock and metal, so any tonal emphasis throws off the balance of the music), closed back/over ear (I need the noise cancellation), and in the under-$100 category (unless there's something fantastic that's a little over, in which case I'll look used/refurbished). Thoughts/recommendations?

K272HD, HP100, MDR-V6, HM5 (or its many clones).

Depending on the season you can find any of these either new or in like-new condition for under $100.

There's actually a few eBay auctions right now for new 272HDs that will probably end just around $100.

Due to price, I have to cut most of those out, and based on a few comparisons I've seen, it seems like the Sony MDR-ZX700 is better for what I'm using it for (no amp, just laptop/mp3 player/tablet). Between those two is one a better option in terms of quality, durability, or comfort, or should I just go for what's cheaper?

--Edit--

After a little more digging, I've also seen mention of the Sennheiser HD448. Between those three, what's my best option?

The 7506 is the same as the v6 in terms of sound quality and basically everything else I care about, and is more expensive. At this point, I'm just trying to decide between the HD448, the ZX700, and the SRH-840. Opinions?

I can't make comment on sound quality comparison, but HD448 is far more comfortable than other two. If your ears are above-average big, ZX700 (and all others using same shell) becomes on-the-ear.

Not sure about the HD448 but I will vote for SRH-840 over ZX700 :)
