Doesn't have to be portable, as I have a pair of KSC75. I will either use unamped or with a PA2V2. I listen mostly to death metal and electronica, so what I'd want most is a nice, tight kick drum. I'm willing to go a bit above $100 if it'd REALLY be worth it. Sites to purchase the cans from would help. Thanks for any advice.

I have the 555's and the 595's and I listen to mostly 80's/90's death/thrash metal.
I like the 595's amped the most but I do indeed use my 555's when i am on the move, unamped, and they really do hold thier own. They have a tad less detail and may sound almost to warm but for the most part they fit the bill.
Plus they can be had for under $100!

HD555 is both comfortable and bassy ... but i think the sound is a bit muddy...

SR60 - 80 might be a good choice, the sound is brighter then the HD555

ATH-A500 also a good choice, both comfortable and bassy... but it's a bit hot for the ears if you use it for a long time

That's only my personal opinion, hope to hear more from everybody

Get the grado sr60s , they are good for the type of music you like. Plus with the comfy pads they come with you will have a more comfortable fit than you would with the sr80s IMHO.

i have the sony mvr 6 with pad mod and it really plays my metal well. With the mod it really isolates your ears so that you feel like you are in the music. Works great with rap (kanye), thrash (megadeth), classic rock (zeppelin), or death (In Flames, Shadows Fall, Bodom). I was looking into the 595 and 555 but I wanted a closed model so that i could use them at home or on the move

Yes...you can purchase the comfy pads for the SR-80 for $10 extra. Most people stick with the bowls that come with the SR-80s because of the increased clarity/soundstage. But it's nice to have extra pads to swap back and forth with.
