I have a Panasonic Viera 42 inch plasma TV. I wanted to buy a 2.1 audio system + amplifier/receiver for mini home theatre system for my small room. Suggestions please....

What kind of budget are you looking at here? I assume you want a 2.1 system (instead of a 5.1) so it won't be as expensive or maybe you just don't have room for the other speakers since you said it's a small room?

When I had a smaller room to work with, I used products from orb audio. They make very high quality small round speakers and have other components also. You can start out small and add additional orbs at any time to grow the system.

That's correct!! I am looking for  2.1 instead of 5.1. Looking to get an AV receiver + 2 book shelf speakers + sub woofer(if possible)....
One of my friend suggested this.....budget not greater than 400$.

Considering that then, here's my suggestion from my experience.

I suggest you look into this setup here:

Velodyne VX-11 Sub
Polk Monitor 30 Bookshelf speakers
Denon AVR-1312 Receiver

This is the setup that I use right now and I greatly enjoy it!

Prices fluxuate on some of these products and some of them you can get used (if you choose to do so).

That Velodyne is a good sub for under $200.

For receivers, check accessories4less.com. Factory refurbished/factory warrantied Denons and Onkyos

Those Monitor30s are often a good bargain at Newegg.com. While there, check out the Pioneer BS21s, too.
