I want to get a higher model Sennheiser for use with my RockHopper Pimeta. Im trying to get exposure to as many house sounds as possible. If it where between these 2 cans, which would be the better introduction to Senns? I would use it as an all around can.
Thanks

Where did you find them at that price?

??? I'd agree that with a good amp the 580 offers more detail than the 555.

But the argument that the 515,555,595 isn't the senn signature sound doesn't make any sense. They are sennheisers, therefore they sound like sennheisers by definition. Anyway, its not really relevant to the question of which phones to buy. You should buy what sounds good to you, period.

Well, my point was when most people refer to the Senn sound, they're referring to the HD580/600/650 series. The HD515/555/595 is usually referred to as being a bit more forward than the typical Sennheiser sound.

I courted heresy when I made this decision, and bought the 555. I was willing to sacrifice a cut in (amped) sound quality for greater unamped versatility (555s are probably close to the best sound you can get right out of an iPod, IMO), and quite honestly have (and love) many songs that probably would never test the true potential of either of these cans. Also, from reading reviews of them, I believe the 5x5 series is more of an all-rounder then the classic Senns; some people say that the 580/600 just can't cut it for rock, but the 555/595 are at least acceptable, as they are for pretty much everything.

I remember pantera sounding boring on my old 580s. the 555 might be slightly better here. the only thing i liked with the 580 was the detail but the veil is more pronounced on it than the 555 and the 580s bass are muddier IMO
