I am looking for some headphones that has the same characteristics as Grado(slam) but with a airier larger soundstage. Does anything that resembles this exist? I was thinking about the AKG K501 but most reviews seems to point out that the sound is very tame.

Personally, I'd recommend the Grado 225...but that's just me.

The AKG K501 is a great headphone. I wouldn't call it tame (that's not a word that I associate with it), but it lacks the "feel it in your chest" thumping power of the Grado.

It seems that there is a trade-off...soundstage vs slam. Oh well.

Aye, definitely.

Well, I can't speak about soundstage... but for the Grado bass slam, it's there -- and then some -- with the W100.

Everything else is, too.

The W100 are the headphones I wanted the Grado SR-80 to be.

I love them!
