Need recommendation on MD Recprder with Atrac Type R

Md portable is fragile than cd discman. Buying a legendary old model is more or less a gambling. One of my friend bet a old sony md portable r50 and he found out it has playback error.

Now, I am using sony Mz-n1 using type-r technology. Product outlook and build is nice. SP recording quality is good(same quality to my desktop md player). Lp2 playback with type-r is not very amazing. SP win lp2 a street. It think lp2 can never get close to sp.

The latest technology Type-s is only very very slightly better than type-r. Sony md 10 years anniversary model Mz-n10 will using type-s. It may be another legendary product after many years.

I borrow my friend's md last week. His md is sharpMD-DR480 which has a 1bit internal amp. I test it with my two headphone hd600 and hd25, I found the sound quality is better than mine! So regret for buying sony

egg, i have both type r unit (r909) and type s (n10), andi can honestly tell you LP2 and LP4 sounds better on my n10 then r909..(although not by much)

type r improves live-time recording quality on SP mode. type s contains type r AND improves playback audio quality on LP modes (both LP2 and LP4)

Dear all,

Thank you for your advices. I just completed a deal on a used Sony R50 and will buy a Type R model for recording. The lattest Sony are too expensive. I may buy a N505 or N707.

Thanks

Andy

sorry to break your bubble, but the N1 has had far more doa units than any other MD model, it has a VERY faulty head...

I have heard that too (both n1, n707 has many dead head....

) If I have a chance, I will definitely choose sharp, not sony!

Sony has better outlook design anyway.

Which headphone are you using?
For me, I use Hd25 (nice combination), hd600 (make Mz-N1 sound like home audio, but it is not a good idea use it on the go), senn mx-500 (compact, fair sound but a bit bassy). sony ex70lp(sony +sony=bad sound)

I always detach the remote stick cos it degrade the sound quality.

My pleasure. Md is my favorite product and wish you enjoy your new md player.

The R50 is the best SP recorder

Over my dead body. ATRAC v4 + a 16-bit ADC isn't going to make it anywhere close to the best recorder out. I dare say that the DR7 makes the best recording portable, be it SP or LP.

On a side note, ATRAC-R is only ATRAC v4.5 that does dual-pass filtering by using a more powerful ARM processor.

Ahh, I keep meaning to A/B a recording done with my DR7 vs. my Type-R JB940 deck...

Come to think of it, I've never done an optical digital recording on my DR7, i've only used it a couple times to record from a mic... I'd have to do some tinkering to figure it out, hehe. I'm so spoiled with the deck...
