I'm looking for a new pair of cans that have good soundstage. Will be using it predominantly for gaming - mostly rainbow six where sound is very important.

Am considering the Sennheiser HD 589 and the AD900x but any other recommendations would be great!

I'm also getting either a Behringer UM2 or focusrite scarlett solo for my mic. Would this be enough to also power the headphones?

i have the AD900Xs they have no bass extension and the driver in the mid-bass region is FAST, like really freakin fast you can hear the bass but due to fast decay there is no time to feel it.

the AD900Xs are also more musical in tuning than the AD700Xs ( more extension at both ends and also less edgy treble) both are still kinda edgy and bright compared to the HD598/599.

in terms of pure gaming i'd get the audio technicas but due to comfort and fit issues the 598/599 might be a safe choice, the AD700X will be better for gaming due the lack of bass, also saves you a couple of $, the ATHs can be powered with a potato as long as it has a headphone jack, the 598 can be powered by most modern smartphones and PCs.

TL;DR both are good choice for gaming it comes down to sound signature preference, want lower-treble upper-mid forward get the ATH, want more bass extension subdued highs and flat mids get the senns.

Assuming you mean Sennheiser HD598, not HD589.
What are the prices of the HD598 and AD900X headphones?
The Technica ATH-AD900x is a very lose fit on the head, so the HD598 might be the better choice.

Yes, Sorry, made a typo. I meant the HD598.

I'm based in Australia so I don't think the HD598 is available for sale anymore. At least, I cannot find any stores that sell them.

As for the AD900X, they seem to be about $270AUD

The AD700X is around $142AUD which is probably more within my budget. How does this pair compare to the K242HD (my current pair)?

See if you can find a good deal on a used Sennheiser HD558.
If you remove the black rubber tape from inside the cups, you get close to the sound of the HD598.

Also check the Takstar HF-580p, it just might be a really good bang for the buck headphone.

i'do what @PurpleAngel suggested, if you can't find the 558s you can fix the ATH headphones by using a rubber band on the wings, or in my case tilting the headphones forward or backwords i have a small head and that works for me, i'm also using the ebay pads which don't effect the sound somehow.

I own the Audio Technica ATH-A900X and for a good period of time, there were my prefer headphone for all audio, with my PC.
I somewhat fixed it's light grip, by using thicker ear pads.
I'm guessing it would have been nice to have the open AD900X, to use as alternative, at that time.
