That's it? Great SQ?

Any other features needed?

MP3/OGG/ATRAC playback or just "redbook" CD's?

Display on device or remote?

Long battery life?

Suggestions:

Recent: Sony D-NE10 (might find one on close out)

Vintage: Sony D-555, iriver IMP-350

Sony D-NE920 or D-NE20 would seem to be the top of the line for models in current production (since D-NE10/900 and iRiver SlimX are out of production). I can confirm that the D-NE920 sounds damn good.

Does the D-NE920 have a line out? If not what new Sony PCDP does?

I have an iRiver slimx and it is garbage for playing normal CDs. Great for mp3s, but the audio CD playing is utter trash. About a third of my cds have major problems in it but don't in any other cd player.

Really? I've never had any issues with either my iMP-350 or my current 400 when playing audio CD's, other than poor battery life with is pretty much standard on all iRiver CDP's

I also have a slimx 350 and I've thus tossed it into the closet in favor of my old Panasonic pcdp. As mentioned the 350 has horrible battery life when used with redbook cds, a little better with mp3. Other complaints I have is that the sound quality is only average at best from the headphone out, I haven't hooked up the lineout to an amp yet. What really annoys me is the hiss from the headphone out. Some of the music I have is quiet at parts and I hate hearing that hissssss.

I might pick up a D-NE920 later if the reviews are good.

Thanks for the replies. Actually yes, sound quality is all I am really interested in as it will just be sitting on my night stand next to my bed for listening to before I crash out. I have Ipod's and use lossless format so it may be that a PCDP may just be a placebo effect, but I thought I would test the waters.

To add to Pauls reply. I would like Line out and AC power. Other features would be a bonus, but not a necessity. Thanks! As a side note, I just discovered rushradio.org 24/7 Rush songs @192kbps. Great for work!

I have several "Made in Japan" Sonys from the early '90s that sound great. All have line outs. My favorite is a D-33 with Dual D/A converters. I have a D-101, D-2, D-T24, D-171, and a couple of others I can't think of. I also have a couple of "Made in Japan" Panasonics from the same era. They are pretty good, but I prefer the Sonys. I got them for next to nothing on ebay. When I was looking, if I wasn't familiar with the particular one listed, I sent the seller a question to ask about line outs, Made in Japan, etc. I spent about $20 for the D-33, which was like new in the original box with AC adapter and manual. The others were less than $10 each. You may find something better, but I doubt you could find a better bargain now than ebay, what with all the rage about iPods and such.

The D-NE920 has both a line-out and an optical out. It can also run on AC power, and has incredible battery life.
