The Golds are a bassmonster, while the Coppers are a little more balanced with more treble emphasis and a more forward, detailed midrange, and a wider soundstage. They don't NEED amping, but they aren't the most efficient 'phone out there. You'll need to crank up the volume a bit. The Coppers especially are plagued by build-quality issues. "Bad batch" Coppers are still floating around out there.
