Well, actually my brother in law needs help. They just moved into a new house and he's looking for some speakers for a home theater. He has points he can use on a couple sites which gives him these three for his top options...

http://www.amazon.com/JBL-Cinema-300-Speaker-System/dp/B004RMSMJ8/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

http://reviews.cnet.com/bluetooth-speakers/kef-htf8003/4505-34810_7-33976587.html

http://hometheater.about.com/od/loudspeakerreview1/fr/Harman_Kardon_HKTS20_Speaker_System_Review.htm

He is willing to put a little extra money towards components if needed. Any of these decent options?

Not sure what his budget is but i would steer clear of boxed HT sets and soundbars to be honest

How big is his HT room and/or how far away is the viewing/listening position? You could get an entry level HDMI AVR and perhaps fronts/center channel speakers of the same make/line for timbre matching and a nice 10-12" active subwoofer if $$ is tight? Under $200 HDMI AVRs i would look at the offerings from Yamaha, Denon and Pioneer

I agree with Trog.

For under $500, get the Pioneer Andrew Jones series speakers on sale at Frys: http://www.frys.com/ads/page5#AdNavi along with the matching center from Tiger Direct for $67.

Here's a review on the Pioneers: http://www.audioholics.com/reviews/speakers/floorstanding/pioneer-sp-pk52fs. The review is right. This is one of the best sounding budget systems there is, and it will be much better than any small satellite HTIB solutions. There's a whole big owners thread about the Pioneer Andrew Jones speakers over at AVS if you want to learn more: http://www.avsforum.com/t/1278774/pioneers-speaker-genius-hits-low-price-point

Newegg has a sale on the Polk PSW505 subwoofer for $149. Never been at that price, and it's considered one of the best values for HT usage at $200. I would expect that it could sell out quickly at that price.
