Need help setting up 2.1 system - No highs being output

An AVR has amplification already built-in. So no sense in paying the extra for the amplifiers in powered monitors. Plus, I'm pretty sure that five channel RCA output so that you could hook up a 5.0 powered speaker set to an AVR is now only available as a feature in expensive AVRs because most people don't need that for home audio systems. They use passive speakers.

I was thinking about getting a soundcard also for privacy in the house for others hearing what goes on in VoIP. I'd have the headphones with the VoIP program assigned to the onboard device and have the speakers hooked up to the soundcard for music or whatever as another device. Can this be done? What I mean is, will having a soundcard show up as a separate device in the windows manager or will it still just say "Speakers - Realtek HD Audio"?

Because currently I can't separate audio jacks into their own devices for this purpose.
