I found my old set of Sony MDR-V600's in a box (purchased around 1997), but the fake leather earpads have melted -- maybe from exposure to direct sunlight -- and the seams opened up. Do they sell inexpensive replacements or is there some other creative way to replace them?

Pads are available here (do a search on 'V600'). Looks like $13 plus shipping. Unless money is really tight, like others have said, you may want to look at the V6 ($70) or Senn 280 (same) or various other phones. Course you've already got the HD650, so you know good sound.

Thanks. Looks like it would be $26 + shipping to repair ($13 covers the cost of one pad). I'm not looking to purchase another pair of headphones; I just thought it might be cheap enough to fix these up to give to someone else.

It's a sign from above to get some real phones. Go with it.

If that were true, only a few people here have "real" phones. I just meant a good phone. Now who doesn't want that?

Yeah, I own Sennheiser HD-650's, a pair of broken HD-580's (planning on visiting a service center soon to get an estimate), "melted-pad" Sony MDR-V600's, and various other earphones, but I was just doing some housecleaning.

I guess the MDR-V600's are hardly worth fixing for that price, but if there was some other inventive way people had experience with (such as the Grado sponge pad mod), I'd like to know the details.

my comment was about the fact that ya8282 has Senn 650's listed in his/her sig, and you suggested that he/she get "real phones".

Well, what's the street price of these things? Maybe he could repair them and sell them to some poor sod and end up recieving more than he shelled out for the repair...
