I followed these instructions carefully but nothing happens.

I want to change some sound settings.

I went to home menu, switch to hold. While pressing option button I pressed the rest and put hold off afterwards

The code for the A80x seriies doesn't work on the A816.

1) Go to the home menu and slide the [HOLD] key to the on position.

2) Hold down the [OPTION] key, and the press : Up, Up, Down, Down, Right, Left, Up, Down, Up, Down, Right, [PLAY].

3) Slide the [HOLD] key to the off position. When the system reboots and displays a new type of screen, press [BACK].

I couldnt do it either at first

just go to the menu..

press the hold key

Hold option

Press U U DD L R U D U D R then start or whichever code corresponds to ur player

the mesage which is flashing, saying hold is on should turn a brighter white...

Turn off the hold button : Voila....the player will restart and go into the elusive menu thing

DAC settings (firmware menu)
Press "Back", then activate "Hold" switch. Now press "Option" and hold down
while entering the following w/the direction pad:
up, up, down, down, right, left, up , down, up ,down, right, play/pause

These are MY settings - kills the over-processed sound the A72X/A82X series has.
Bass: -0.0 @ 50Hz (default is -4.5)
Treble: -4.5 @ 15kHz (default is -0.0)

These are my EQ settings - find whats best for you:
Clear Bass: +2 or +3 depending on HP
Equalizer: +3, -0, +0, +1, +2
DSEE, Clear Stereo: OFF and Normalizer: ON

These work for me. You can ONLY adjust the bass & treble - but it seems to be enough to make it sound sweet
(like my S618 - but BETTER). Now it sounds like a Sony should - clean sound, powerful bass, excellent highs -
but now they're not overpowering and "piercing".

PS: This also allows you to access the service menu on the S61X/A81X series as well FWIW.

Also,..... Enjoy the BUBBLES!!!

Any idea why the A818 can't be adjusted past -0.0 on the T-Gain? Only goes up to +1.5 max, but can't go into the minus region.

These settings are for the A72X/A82X series - I hoped they might help out people w/the other players. The SQ on the S61X/A81X series isn't in need of the same kind of adjustments as the A72X/A82X series. My S618 sounded GREAT and didn't need the same tweaks as the A829 I now have.

tgain to -7.5 @15
Bgain to -4.5 @ 5
does wonders for your sound

besides that EQ settings to +2 +1 0 +2 +1

really cleared up the sound for me.

strange that sony doesn't put these settings on default
