I am trying to choose between the DT 770 and 880 but am a bit stuck. From what I read, the 880 is the better sounding setup, but I want to use these while I'm playing poker in a casino or traveling (i.e. on an airplane). I don't plan on having them cranked up, but even still, will I disturb people with the 880s and not the 770s? Will the ambient noise leak into the 880s and not the 770s? Or can people still hear what I'm listening to with closed cans so that it doesn't matter either way? Thanks for the help!

You'll want closed.

BTW, both those cans are HUGE. They're really meaty headphones. I would laugh at someone wearing their 770's or 880's out in public.

I was just kidding, but according to a lot of people here, the K81Djs would be a great bet.

I must disagree. DT880s are NOT huge. They're about average among full-sized headphones. Audio-Technica line would be huge.

That's right. But, any full-sized headphone will look huge if worn in public. Circumaural cans of any sort are not that common on the mass-consumer market.

But getting back to the original question, open headphones on an airplane does not sound like a very good idea at all. Yes, the person next to you will hear it. And yes, the awesome sound quality of the DT-880 would probably be killed by the giant sucking noise.

Have you looked at any of the numerous iems recommended on this site? I have the 770s and I don't think they'd be great on an airplane. They might be closed but I don't find them great for isolation. Not bad, but not great either. I agree with the other people who have said that either of the phones you're looking into will look big and awkward and probably won't fit your bill for public use.

For airplane use, a simple closed headphone is not enough. You need an IEM or active noise cancellation. The DT770 is good for use next to a computer though...

On the other hand, they might just inspire envy!

The DTs aren't geeky looking cans. Unlike, say, the HD650, K701 or any grados you care to name (including the ludicrous GS1000, which IMHO looks like the third runner-up in some regional wood-turning contest). In fact, there must be a geekiest looking phones thread here somewhere. Next to these hideous objects, the Beyers are reasonably anonymous and restrained - nay, stylish!

I appreciate all the feedback so far. I'm just getting started so I'm not like you guys yet...maybe one day I'll have a setup for listening to music by the fireplace, one for on the beach, and soon enough there will be waterproof ones for swimming and the shower.

I think I was trying to have the best of both worlds but it seems that portability is defintiely an issue. I want to get something good to start off with, but I'm thinking I should get warmed up with something that is easy to carry around and doesn't cost too much. From the looks of it, I will soon spend most of my life savings in my quest for the best sounding cans ever made...and then go into debt buying an amp to make them sound even better. Sounds good to me!

Every casino I've been to up here did not allow me to wear headphones while playing poker or blackjack. I think there are obvious reasons as to why.

Anyway, your best bet would be a pair of IEMs. Judging from popular opinion here, most noise cancelling headphones sacrifice isolation for sound quality.

The K81 is a perfect choice for your situation - if you like some bass.
