I've read around on head-fi a lot over the past few years and i finally decided to create an account, so I'm brand new. Recently I've been looking to buy a nice 2.1 system. I have a denon AVR-1609 receiver that i will be using. My budget is basically around 250 for the passive bookshelf speakers and 200 for the subwoofer. I have been thinking about getting the polk audio rti a1's or audioengine p4's and a polk audio psw111 sub or a dayton sub-120. If somebody could give me some advice on what is the best in the price range, that would be awesome.

The prices in these links aren't anywhere near the price on amazon.

Take your time thats the key.  even though you have pretty much no budget allowance there are a few options open.  Are you going to be using the speakers on the desktop with a computer or on stands in a system?

If the P4's are anything like other Audioengine products, I'd give them a try. Although I may be a bit biased on my opinion as I own a pair of A2's and A5's.

ill most likely be able to expand my budget, these will just be used as computer speakers. the p4's look sweet but im really interested in those superzero 2.0's. i just need some nice computer speakers to go to college and that are built well enough to travel between college and home.

If you are just going to use them as computer speakers then you may be better off getting an active desktop loudspeaker like the Swan M200MkII.  With the Superzeor's you'll need an amp to drive them.

at this price point would the speakers sound similar? or is one notably better than the other?  my denon receiver should be more than enough to drive the superzero's and im fine with lugging that around to school and back, whichever gives me the better sound.

Well if you have a receiver to drive the Superzero's then you'll be all set.   As far as sound goes you probably can't go wrong with either one but the superzero have a complimentary subwoofer.      The Swans are good if you need active speakers and have no other amplification and will just be using the signal out of your computer.  but they work well as desktop speakers whereas the Superzero will  probably do best on speaker stands.

The superzero 2.0's are acoustic suspension, some amps can stuggle to drive these and they do lack low-end same for sub - 3db at 37hz it doesn't go that low, the dayton you was looking at is -3db at 25hz . you should look at the behringers there in your budget http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-B2030P-Ultra-Linear-Reference-Monitor/dp/B000N94S7O/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1323185237&sr=8-1 , http://www.amazon.com/Behringer-B2031P-Ultra-Linear-Reference-Monitor/dp/B000LQ2ABK/ref=sr_1_1?s=musical-instruments&ie=UTF8&qid=1323185280&sr=1-1 , There alot of speaker for little money.
