I am currently considering the Fostex TH-600 and the Beyerdynamic T5p.  I have searched the forms and the web, but I can't find much in the way of direct comparisons between these two models of headphones.  I would really appreciate some input.  I currently have a pair of AKG K550 headphones and would like to upgrade.

I am concerned about comfort, isolation, audio quality, and durability.  A detachable cord is a big plus, but it doesn't seem like very many models have this feature.  Has anyone used either of these models of headphones?  Is there another model I should be considering?

Thanks,
Ian

Comfort should be an issue with big, totally around the ear headphones like these.

I too am new to the forum - just joined today. I wish I knew enough to say I'm an audiophile, but that's not the case.  Anyway, in the price range you're looking at, you might want to consider the Ultrasone Signature Pro.  I have been using these for some time and love the sound.

As for your list...

comfort - they are great - can wear them for hours with no fatigue

isolation - excellent - they are closed - I listen often in bed and my wife, two feet away, hears nothing

audio quality - this is subjective - IMO, great

durability - these are built like a tank - from the office to the field where I use them to monitor the audio from my video camera, they handle heavy use with no trouble

detachable cord - comes with two - standard and mini

Here's the link - hope this helps: http://ultrasone.com/index.php/en/products/signature-pro.html

EarthToTommy, Thank you for your response. I really appreciate your input. I was initially considering the Ultrasone Signature Pro until I read this: http://www.head-fi.org/t/630792/beyerdynamic-t5p-vs-ultrasone-signature-pro The impression that I got was that the T5p is both more comfortable and sounds better. When we are talking about over $1000 for a pair of headphones, I want to get this right.

I understand wanting to get things right when spending large sums of money.  Although I'm new to the forum, I'm pretty sure about one thing - much of this is pretty subjective.  Members seem to love many things I think are just OK, and some of the gear that I own and am thrilled with is routinely dismissed by others.  I guess we all hear differently :)  Just wanted to share my experience - good luck with your decision and investment.
