Well if you had $200, I think the A900s are the way to go. I have owned them and they don't need an amp.

Notice the discount coupon on the top of the headphone page..

"Exclusive discount coupons for Head-Fiers at AudioCubes"

AudioCubes is where you would get them.

Audio-Technica ATH-A900 Art Headphones

(read some of the reviews of the headphones there from buyers.)

"Great Cans. I have them for a few months already and I must say they are surprising. Great sound, Great and deep bass, comfty and are easily driven out of my Audigy2ZS and out of my Emu1212M as well."

Without an amp, that might be a challenge. I'm sure you'll find adequate bass without an amp but 'great lows' screams amp (to me).

I would also suggest the Senn HD 595, they seem to be the open counterpart to the A900 from what I've read on this board, and I love my pair. So if you don't need isolation, and want a headphone that isn't as big as the a900, the 595 might be the best choice.

My advice will be to get an amp. If you hang around here long enough you will get one anyway (you’ll see). Plus, as far as I heard, the line out of the ipod is much better then the headphone out. You’ll get more bang for the buck if you go that route imo.

Getting A900’s for the Ipod headphone out, is to me like getting a $2000 exhaust for a Chevrolet Geo.

Being that I have owned the A900s and have an ipod. There is almost no difference between the A900s with an amp than without an amp. The A900s works just great with the Geo.

As for the HD595. These are a 50 ohm headphone. The A900s are a 40 ohm headphone. The ipod jack-out is at 30 ohms. The A900s are going to sound better out of the ipod.

HD595 are better rounded headphone but don't have the bass or the soundstage of the A900s. If I were to get one to run out of just the ipod, I would go with the A900s. The HD595 are still a solid choice.

Depends what the op is using. If he's using MX400's or stock earbuds that's an even worse suggestion. It's better to get the headphone upgrade now and buy an amp to match it then to work backwards.
