Ok i have the MDR v600s and the treble is too boosted on them, i have the HD 580s and I am quite unimpressed with the build quality so once I get them fixed I am selling them.

What else is left in headphones that have EXCELLENT comfort, good build quality and nice sound?

Somehow I think the 7506/V6 would be nearly ideal, with its exaggerated bass and lower treble.

I think so too, usually for gamers I'd recommend the V6/7506 Sonys, mainly because their boosted bass sounds great with all types of explosions and gunfire.

Shoddy HD580 build quality? If you mean the cable, then I totally agree with you, and I'm trading it in for a new cable/amp soon. This might be the ailment of your ills, because with a better amp and upgrade cable, your HD580's should shine in virtually every type of music/sound/game you throw at it.

If you're talking about the housing, then I really don't know what problems you could have. I've sat, stepped on, dropped, and done who knows what with my HD580's and they're still solid as ever, with maybe a superficial scratch or two to show its wear over the years.

Hi guys, thanks a lot for your responses, I was looking at the full featured reviews and it looks as though the AKG 501, Beyerdynamic DT 770 and the Sennheiser HD 590s (assuming the cable connection design in different which it looks as though it is) are within my price range. Maybe I should also be considering the MDR CD1700, but I am not sure about this as I think that sony headphones tend to have an exagerrated bass.

All of these headphones look like they will be comfortable and look as though they have a sturdy design (especially the AKG K501).

any more input?

haha, that's hardly undisputed around here...not that I'm on either side of that fence (having not heard them)

if you feel that the treble is too boosted on the V600, then you might not like the HD590, Grados, DT831, DT931 and CD3000.

Many seem to like the DT531 and A900 (although some say that the A900 has a slightly harsh high end); the DT531 is open (like the HD580 and Grados). Grados do not have long term comfort. And the Beyers tend to get slightly hot after an hour. The HD280 supposedly feels heavy and has too much clamping pressure. I hate the pads on the V6. The Ultrasone 650 is supposedly just as uncomfortable (I tend to think of them as having hard pads).

The K501 would not be an ideal match for gaming. It is open, but it's greatest deficency is it's low efficency.

just do a search for "computer" in the the headphone section. it should bring up a thousand hits.

So your criteria then may be:
Comfort
Impedance
Sound

I would tend to go with the DT531 (about $130) and the A900 (about $200). Who knows, you might like the CD1700
