Hi There,

I have run myself in circles trying to figure out a reasonable Dongle DAC for my setup.

My setup:
Pixel 4 XL
Tidal App (Hifi, not MQA) - I do not want to have to use UAPP - Tidal apparently is able to bypass the Android 48kHz wall now.
IEMs (currently using FLC 8s but may be getting a different pair of high-end IEMs this year)
Stock Google Dongle DAC that came with the phone (THIS IS WHAT I WOULD LIKE TO UPGRADE)

Price limit: 150 USD (but may be convinced to go higher if absolutely necessary)

Must Have:
No/minimal negative coloration to sound
Detachable USB-C Cable
Suitable for IEMs (no hissing/good noise floor)
VERY GOOD SHIELDING VERSUS EMI/RFI. My phone will be the source and the DAC will be right next to it - I will often use this off of cellular signal, not wifi and not airplane mode. I absolutely need to have something that does not pick up interference from a phone signal

Nice to have:
4.4mm in addition to 3.5mm output

Bonus to have:
Physical hardware volume control. This has also been a major confusion for me. I have looked at a lot of DACs recently and some of them feature their own app for volume control (iBasso, HiBy). Why is this necessary? If I get a DAC that features this, do I have to use their app or face running into noise floor issues? I have read that these apps need to take control of the USB-C port (similar to Tidal?) in order to control the volume - would this conflict with my use of Tidal? For DACs that feature a physical volume control instead, are they simply controlling the Android volume control (the same way a cheap in-line mic would) or are they actually controlling the volume of the DAC (or are they controlling the volume of the DAC through the android volume control with some kind of "digital handshake")??? SO CONFUSING.

Please help me :) :) :)

What I chose, as what I thought would cover all my needs going forward, was an AP90 at US$80. 125mw-240mw/32 Ohm balanced. I mostly use it on my laptop.
This was on the basis of a test report on a forum. google : "Moonriver2, Jcally AP98 Measurements." As well as the these, they tested the AP90.
Also a youtuber google : JCALLY AP90 Review - AK4493EQ DAC And The Best Audio Adapter I Have Tried So Far!
Another youtuber described it as neutral to bright treble and recommended something else, because he liked warm. I find it neutral.

What has become my phone go to, is a combined charger and headphone/IEM. I can use it with a battery pack or charge at the same time as listen to music. US$20. it has similar volume to the 32mw below and they say google dongle is 16mw

I'm also using a 32mw/32 Ohm, T01s at USD$16.00.

Yeah I've seen that video and was fine with my Google dongle for a while but am interested in doing a comparison between it and a "real" DAC. Willing to spend a little bit on this experiment.

This might be helpful.

I have a Go Bar and while I believe it would suit your needs it is a little more expensive.

The really distinct take away from the linked article is that there is next to no difference in sound so features versus cost should perhaps govern your choice.

From reading some revies I imagine Tanchjim Space to be a good match with EVO as it is very neutral with maybe slight treble emphasis and it meassures really good.
I also own EVO and from the various sources I have tried it´s always the most neutral ones that match really good.
If you should get it please let me know how you like it as I also wanted to buy it eventually
