Hey! (first post) I happen to be looking for a step up from my HD555s.

I find them a bit too dark and slow for most of the music I listen to (j-pop, twee pop, and pop mostly with rock here and there).

I'd like to have a more upfront sound, but not grados (I don't like harshness in the highs) unless you can convince me otherwise

.

Something more bassy than the HD555 is welcome (as I find them a bit lacking...).
Most of this, however, is a comparison with speakers or crappy cans, so maybe I'm just a basshead.

Price limits! Ha! As long as it's not too... outrageous...(below $400 I'd say). Any help is welcome!
Thanks!

I think there are several Grados where the highs won't be an issue: The MS-2(i)s and RS-2s come to mind, both should be in your price range (though the RS-2s will have to be used, I'm guessing).

Beyond Grados, perhaps the Beyer 880s or Sony SA5000.

You want bass, upfront sound, and fast...maybe a beyer. Dt440, and an amp? I haven't heard them personally but from what I've read they should fit your requirements. They can be a bit bright too though. Aerin listens to a lot of Jpop, and she has owned the dt440. You could pm her...

*EDIT- Actually from the frequency response graphs, I think the grado rs2 might be perfect for you... used.

I agree to the Beyer suggestion, the DT440 may lack a bit of the subtlety of your HD555, but it's supposed to be 'crisper' and more puchy. The best would likely be to have both of them. (I'd say don't overlook that the HD595 is 'faster' sounding than the HD555 though)

my suggestion, HD-580/600

If you have an amp I'd suggest Beyers DT880 or Senn HD650. I have the 650's and I don't look back

You will still benefit from an upgrade without an amp but they will really blow you away amped. I bought a pair of 600's and felt they were a bit bland for my taste and they were returned and upgraded to the 650's (from my original 590's). Good luck!

Definately try the DT880 or the SA5000. I've tried both of them with pop music and they are great.

Too bad the 5k's bass doesnt even compare to the 555's. It is faster though.
