Long time lurker, so hello! I've read around on head-fi that external DACs are better than sound cards, why is it? But anyways I've considered on the Schiit magni/modi, I do gaming about 50/50 on gaming and listening to music and will be using the AKG K550. Thank you in advance!
No matter how good your internal sound card is, there s usually a lot of electrostatic noise being picked up by the naked card inside this metal casing in which all this high powered stuff like graphics card, power supply, processor etc. blast around with their power.
A clean DAC connected via USB or digital/optical, is usually free from "hiss" and other disturbances even if it has exactly the same parts than the sound card.
What's your budget?
I would recommend:
Low budget: Fiio E07K (Dac/Amp) or Fiio E17
Mid: Schiit Modi, Magni stack, or ODAC, O2 Amp
Higher (but by not high end): Schiit Bifrost, Asgard 2
