Need recommendations for headphones.

I will be using them with: Laptop & Indigo Echo PCMCIA sound

I will be needing them for
: 50% iTunes collection/ 50% gaming

I am willing to spend: $250

Types of music: 10% Jazz / 40% 80's-90's / 40% modern rock, top 20 / 10% Classical

Open or Closed
: No preference

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

i'd go with something along the lines of Grado SR-225 or Alessandro MS-2 if you are going to be listening to a lot of rock, which it looks like you will be. the Echo Indigo, which has a pretty decent built in amp, will drive any of these just fine. i also like the Grado sound for gaming.

When you mean gaming, you're talking about a mic i suppose? In that case get the senn pro hd281s, I hope that is the right name, but if it isn't I am sure someone will soon correct me.

Close, you probably meant the 280. They are very isolating, good soundstage and bass, but otherwise not that exciting. Not bad as a gaming can. But meh for music.

I'd say out of that $250 to invest in even the tiniest headphone amp. Then get a can with the remaining budget - how much you have left determines which Grado to get

I really don't do a lot of online gaming anymore so mic isn't necessary and portable is not a factor either. The echo does have a built in amp but not sure how powerful it is...if it will drive some of the "hungrier" cans.
