[Sphinx]

I've been going through thread after thread for a good 2 weeks now trying to see what would fit my needs. I'm still at a loss and would like some opnions from Fellow head-fi'ers... 
 
I currently have in my setup a PC as a source filled with FLAC hooked up via the SPDIF port to a Arcam AV9 Pre/Processor which go to a pair of Emotiva Stealth 8 powered Speakers. 

The advice I'm looking for is I have about $250-$300(Christmas Bonus) to spend on a DAC and I have no idea which to get, I've looked at the different kinds and frankly there are to many. I'm also open to getting a kit and building my own as I'm a Electronics Tech by trade so soldering is not a big deal for me.

Is this for the existing speakers or headphones? Are you considering additional amplification?

For the time being it would be for my Speakers, I do plan on getting back into headphone listening but for now I'm going to concentrate on getting my source equipment the best I could afford and go from there.
