So... I just moved to Manhattan and in the process I got rid of most of my stuff because my new place is (of course) tiny. It's basically just two rooms, a bedroom and a livingroom (with a kitchen niche in one corner). I got rid of my big speakers, the receiver, CD, TV, DVD, etc. etc. and just kept my laptop and headphones (I mainly use my AKG K271s at home). I'm going totally television-free so I just need a solution for music/audio.
I want to be able to listen to music anywhere in those two rooms without a big space investment or having to cart my laptop from room to room (it's mainly going to live on the desk in the bedroom). I'm not sure about the best solution, and I'm pretty open-minded, i.e., not fixed into any idea of how I need to do this. A dedicated streaming media device? Bluetooth speakers? Some kind of bluetooth/wifi audio adapter? I feel like this is a common enough situation that there should be an obvious and good solution, but I haven't quite figured it out. I've done some research, but for the most part the reviews I've found are missing any kind of real sound quality discussion, which is why I came here...
I foresee headphone use being the main part of my music listening since I live on a busy street and right over a subway line, so there is a certain amount of background noise that I would prefer to block out. But it would be nice to be able to have speakers in the livingroom if I had a couple of friends over to hang out. Bluetooth speakers would be an easy fix for that (if there are any that actually sound acceptable) but I'm kind of stumped on being able to use my headphones in both rooms without moving the computer or using an enormously long cable.
