Looking for an upgrade from my CALs. I love my CALs but I wished it had better isolation. I can say I am not a basshead, but it doesn't mean I don't like bass. I think the most important quality I'm looking for is clarity. I intend to listen to music on my phone or my computer and I don't know if I really want to get an amp. I guess a m50x with an amp would still fit my budget of $250.

To make it more clear what I'm looking for
  1. around $250 budget
  2. closed
  3. an upgrade from my CALs so no Beats
  4. has good clarity
  5. good isolation

An amp is only necessary if your headphones can't be driven properly by the source. Almost all portable gear should be easy to drive, so an additional amp is often unnecessary. You would also be double amping because most mobile phones and laptops do not have an option to bypass the internal amp.

Very good headphones in your price range would be:
- NAD VISO HP50
- First generation Sennheiser Momentum Over-ear (might fit your tastes better)
- Beyerdynamic T51i (personal favourite and also suits your tastes)
