Need a new MP3 player...

well, for those unable to imagine "only" having 256mb or 512mb of space on a flash player, you're using it for the wrong reason. Flash players are small, and because they're solid state and completely skip-free, theyre ideal for excercising with. Even if you work out for three hours, put your favorite songs on there, and when you get home, change it for the next day! Flash players, to me, seem perfect as a second portable player for excercising, so please, don't bash on flash players!

I just checked out my current music CD and found out that it's 125 songs taking up 273 megs. So, my only options are 512 flash players or HD based players. And because they cost around the same, I think I'm going to have to stick with getting a HD based player (mini Ipod or the Creative Zen Touch).

The shape does look a little weird to me though, and the controls don't look too good. Anyways, I've decided to get a mini iPod, but I'm going to wait a few months until all the problems get sorted out with them.

I don't think I want a harddrive based one because, as I previously mentioned, my current cd only contains about ~250 megs of music. I probably won't ever get more than 500 megs worth of music on there. So, mp3 players like the new iPod are out.

Here's what I'm looking for:
- Flash Memory based MP3 Player
- <$200 (Not retail, but how much I can get it for from a reliable website)
- Remote control if possible
- Easy to navigate through songs
- Sturdy (Can roll over it in bed and maybe step on it and still have it working)
- Easy to see lit screen
- Good sound for "real" headphones, like the Audio-Technica A500s.

How about the IAUDIO? Old design or a new one. People have a good reviews on them. Plus good sound quality and small.

Check it out.

If you wanna go cheap, you can always do what I did: get a cheap, upgradable flash player and an add-in card. I have a Rio S30S (~$75 at Costco a year or so ago) and a 256MB SD card ($35 on sale), works great. And it's small enough so that you won't need a remote. Only problem is it has trouble driving my SR-60's at it's highest volumes (25/30 and up get distorted), but sounds fine at sane volumes. Something to consider...

What do you guys think of the iRiver iFP-795? Would it be good enough to drive the A500s?

You want a small, flash-based player with 512 MB for less than $200 that has easy-to-use navigation? You have few options, dude.

Rio's flash players are awesome. They made the first, and they continue to make quality flash memory based players. There are three models out right now, the Chiba, somewhat bulky and more than the alternatives, I leave this one out). The Cali, a nicer Chiba. And the newer models, the Forge, which is the only one to come with 512 MB of memory and support 1 GB with another flash memory card. It's the most advanced of the three.

256 MB cali, $121

256 MB Rio Forge, $139

512 MB Rio Forge, $189

Search around a bit, these players get rave reviews. The Forge looks pretty slick, too.

Are the Rio Forge's backlit when you press a button? I'm still more interested in the iRiver iFP-795, but I'd like your guys' opinions on it.

EDIT: Just saw the Nomad MuVo2 4GB model...looks pretty good and is priced about the same as the iRiver. Which one is better?

If you're looking for an expandable flash MP3 player, I just saw the other day that Costco is selling the Rio Cali 256MB for $100. I have a Rio S30S, which is the generation before the Cali, and it's a great little player. The thing took more than a beating and it still works good as new. The UI is very simple and intuitive, the software's very good (I love it's DJ feature, replaces a set percentage of songs on the player with new ones to keep things fresh), and Rio's waaayyy better than iRiver when it comes to upgrading firmware.

Should I really considering upgrading firmware when buying an mp3 player? Seems like quite a minute detail...
