Nano + Mini3 + AD700 > Nano + AD700 ?

I have a 1st G ipod nano that's connected to a mini3 through the headphone jack (I don't have a LOD yet). But somehow, it sounds better than when my AD700 is directly connected to the ipod. Are my ears just playing tricks on me?
