Name your fav Power Trios

Trios are the greatest. Lots and lots of good three-man bands.

On a side note, how many two-man bands do you know of? I mean real bands here. I can only think of one -- Local H. They're a KC band, but they're on a national label. Lead singer plays a guitar/bass combo rig and then there's just the drummer. Their music lacks complexity, but it works out pretty well. ...

The Jimi Hendrix Experience/Band of Gypsies
John Abercrombie's trio on "Timeless"

"unplugged" but powerful:
Dewey Redman's trio on "Tarik"
Zane Massey's trios on "Brass Knuckles"
McCoy Tyner's trio on "Trident"
...

There's some really great replies so far. Some old favorites, and some new ones to check out too.

Jimi Hendrix - Band of Gypsys (Jimi Hendrix + Buddy Miles + Billy Cox)

So far it's Jimi Hendrix and The Cream tied for the the lead, with 3 posts each. In this corner: Jimi, Mitch Mitchell, Noel Redding / Jimi, Buddy Miles, Billy Cox - 2 combinations to make 2 unforgettable power trios with 1 lead guitarist. In that corner: Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker, making formidable opponents. Who will win?

My list would be:

Rush
Gov't Mule
Trower (with Dewar, Lordan)
Trower (with Jack Bruce, Lordan)
Zebra
ZZ Top
James Gang (Joe Walsh's first group)
Jimi Hendrix Experience
Jimi's Band Of Gypsies
Mountain (Leslie West)
Leslie West's trio with Jack Bruce
Cream

From my point of view is a deuce - although I reminded Hendrix, it was only to mention a specific "short-timed" trio which put out one of his best albums, on my opinion - I consider The Cream no less by an inch and I still remember the arguments my friends had when we were younger - which is a better guitarist - Hendrix or Clapton? I was saying the best is BOTH...

Say, I'm a big Jack Bruce fan: could you say something about how to find these...titles, labels, etc.? Thanks.

Your realize that "Mountain" was not a trio and that the bassist was Felix Pappilardi--right? YOu are saying that West, Bruce, and some other guy worked as a trio??? Wow!

Gotcha about mountain, i forgot about them not being a trio.

Bruce's work with Trower was two albums:
The first one was BLT, the second Truce. BLT was more Trower's album, he wrote/co-wrote more of the tunes than Bruce. The balance of the writing credits shifted towards Bruce on Truce. They never toured together.

For convenience, here is a link to the cd on amazon:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...425502-0002446

These were remastered in 1998, and the 2 discs were put on one disc.

Jack Bruce with Leslie West is found here:

http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...425502-0002446

Group was West, Bruce & Laing, album was Why Dontcha. Great stuff.

Hope that helps.
