The cheaper Marantz players have never impressed me, but I can't say the same for the NAD players. I have been very impressed by the NAD C541. The latest version, the C541i is sure to impress.
I just got a NAD C541i as well. I like it a lot. My old source is the D-25S, so this is a pretty big improvement. Music is focused, energetic, refined, detailed, and fast/responsive. Of course this is compared to the D-25S. I dont know about Marantz players but I think the NAD C541i is a very good deal. I am very happy with mine.
I've only compared the NAD 541i and the Marantz CD6000OSE, and this comparison was done quite long ago...
Even though using a pair of HD600s I had to use different integrated amps to drive them, but both amps were from NAD, so perhaps there isn't any big difference between the two amps.
I prefered the 541i to the CD6000 OSE, but a NAD-NAD setup probably has more synergy than a Marantz-NAD.
I had a NAD 541i for a year or so. I liked it to start with, but it became irritating after a while. Lead instruments aren't very well balanced with the rest of the sounds and it's got slightly fatiguing highs. I compared a Marantz CD63mk2 KI to the NAD and prefered the Marantz since I thought it had better balance. The soundstage on the Marantz was also deeper and better defined. That Marantz model would have cost about twice the price of the NAD though....
davidmiya, I couldn't help but notice that NAD appears to be introducing a replacement for the C541i, the C542.
Currently, the introduction could just be limited to the UK market (or markets outside the US) though. ATM, there seems to be very little specific info about distribution.
The following 2-page PDF doc from NAD describes the C542.
