I'm certainly interested to see how the new gear stacks up against the coverted Old School units, that's for sure.

I'm also curious to see how the results compare to manufacturer specs, although as you say it's a 2nd gen copy so results may be not be accurate.

Hello,

Sony MZ-N10, USA model. Using Sony optical cable between D-EJ2000 and MZ-N10 a digital copy of the RightMark CD of test signals was made. Seemed to record OK. Not sure how accurate these results will be as a result of this "second generation" copy to MD but I thought it might be fun to try.

Sony MZ-10, headphone out, no EQ RightMark results:

Frequency response, dB: +0.60, -1.20
Noise level, dBA: -84.9
Dynamic range, dBA: 84.6
THD, %: .0059
Intermodulation, %: 0.163
Stereo crosstalk, dB -83.9

Frequency response characteristics:

This is one weird graph. The entire frequency response looks like a serrated knife edge with +/- .5 and +/- .2 db spikes and dips all over the place. Given that, the reponse is, uh, roughly flat from 20Hz to 2KHz with a -.5db valley between 2kHz and 10kHz. At 10kHz a general rolloff begins and is -1.0 db at 15khz. At about 17kHz a sharp rolloff begins and is -20db down at 18kHz, a slight bump and then becomes -50db down at 19kHz. Then a little bump between 19.5kHz and 21khz at -57 db. Looks weird, to say the least.

Other graphs look OK. Compared to the D-EJ2000 the MZ-N10 compares favorably. While the N10's IMD graph isn't as good as the D-EJ2000, the Stereo crosstalk graph is impressive. The best of any of the tested units today.

Might try testing and posting some results of some classic minidisc units tomorrow.

Best regards,

Paul
