I have a $250 budget and i am interested in the following 'phones:
Audio Technica Es7
Ultrasone HFI-550
Equation RP-21
Equation RP-15
Beyerdynamic Dt-770

My goal is to get a headphone with good bass- better than the k-81 (my k-81's bass is mud now)

I listen to metal, thrash, hard rock, and RnB (dont ask)

I will be running it out of a gen2 ipod shuffle so the maximum encode rate is 320 kb/s (no lossless

)

Please give me your insight on these (or suggest a can that isnt on the list)
THANKS!!

The equations will do fine straight out of the ipod, a little better than the DT-770 will, and you'll like the RP-21 better than the RP-15.

I haven't heard the ES7 or the HFI-550.

can you measure how large the rp-21's earcups are? If they are somewhat small, for a circum-aural I will probably buy them. Also, how do you think they would fare in public transit?

the RP-21 ear cup is circular about 3 and 3/4 inches outside to outside measurement with about a 2 and 1/2 inch circular opening for your ear. The ear cup from the pad out to the outside of the transducer housing is about 2 inches.

The Equations are well built

Might also want to consider the Sennheiser HD25-1. Very tight, articulate bass and widely considered to be the best portable headphone ever made -- it's also well within your budget even with upgraded pads (velour) and cable (silver) like mine.

I dont want to recable an expensive headphone - but are the velour pads worth it, and do they mess with the sound?
