Hello all, my Pioneer RT-1020L reel to reel gave up the ghost and it is not fixable.
Im looking into a new deck and was wondering which manufacture is better?

What do you think of these decks?

AKAI GX-636 RECORDER
TEAC X-10R RECORDER
TASCAM
PIONEER

Hi Ray,

I cannot give you a comparison of those, but can only say that I absolutely love my Teac X-10R.  I have been positively stunned by how good it sounds.  I got it for $400, local pick up, and had just been serviced and cleaned.  Really, really sounds good.  Operationally it's a breeze to use, and is very reliable.

Note that it supports 3.75 ips and 7.5 ips, but not 15 ips.

Let us know what you end up with.  Reel decks are so awesome.  I'm sure you are bummed about your Pioneer, but this will be a fun chance to get something new!

Yes Skylab, I am very psyched about my new acquisition!
I was pretty much done with my system.
Finding a new reel to reel is going to be fun!
I am really thinking about getting a custom reel to reel from J-Corder.
I have the money but I was saving it for a new camera.
I'm going to have to think long and hard about spending that much money.
He sure does make a beautiful deck!!!
I really love the white one.

WOW, those are gorgeous!  That top black Technics made me drool big time.  Not for the faint of wallet though, are they?

LOL!  I'd probably sell a kidney for that top one, though

Hello Skylab!
Do you think that this deck is worth $599.00.
They claim that it is in perfect working order, and is cosmetically in excellent condition.
Or should I keep looking.
What do you think?

Well, I have been very happy with mine, but I am no expert in the prices of reel decks overall.  I paid $400 for mine which was in very good condition.  So $600 for one in great condition isn;t too bad, especially of he includes those metal take-up reels, which tend to sell for $50 each on their own.

If you have material it's worth the investment. They still merit the respect earned in their time and the looks are timelessly classic. A serious piece of gear compared to today's boxes.

Very nice Ray!  How do you like it?  Nice to have another X-10R brother

I love the deck Skylab.
I just ordered the NAB Studio Hub Adapters by darklab.
They should really make the deck stand out.

I also found a source for excellent condition reels loaded with new (Quantegy 632 — 2,500 feet with leaders attached) tape.
He had Scotch and Ampex reels. I bought some of each.
I'm ready to start recording!
