What a wonderful way to listen to your music. BTW your mac must be having a lot of storage space. Unfortunately, I use a Macbook Pro, no chance of upgrading my storage space, unless 1 TB notebook drives become really cheap

I use numerous external harddrives.  My iMac I think only has like 500gb.

This is incredible.  What a fine job you did with your music collection!  How many hours do you think you put in? 
 
So you are using Apple Lossless to listen to music?  Do you notice a difference between your music server and your redbook/transport into your DAC?  Ever since my Emm Labs transport broke I am using my Macbook Pro Toslink into my DCC2.  I feel like the sound isn't as good as it was with redbook/transport into DAC.  Have you ever thought about going uncompressed, bit-for-bit? 
 
Finally, what kinds of metal drawers are you using to store your CDs?  I have about one tenth the number of CDs you have, but they still take up some space.  Can you link to your drawers and perhaps provide some pictures of how you have them stored?  I am really looking for some storage solutions.

The amount of hours I've put into the cataloging alone is easily 2500+ plus about another 3000 to go.  Some don't believe me on this, but it's really true.  On days when I don't work, I've put in 12 hour straight shifts easily.
 
I've never really considered going WAV if that's what you mean?  I've never noticed a degradation in sound quality going toslink into the DAC.  However if there's a device I can buy which can make a MAC transport go coaxial I'm all for that.  My DAC by the way is the MSB Platinum 3.  It doesn't have any of the filter upgrades or upsampling upgrades, but it is still up there in terms of the best DAC I've ever heard, though I admit to not hearing more than a handful.  These days MSB is making The Diamond DAC which apparently to some people is the finest DAC ever made, and I would certainly hope its up there granted its 5 figure price.
 
The drawers which I use are really wonderful, but ultra expensive.

If you have a large collection and the money to do so, I believe this is the ideal way to store your CDs.  A lot of people throw out the Jewel Cases and store the CDs in organizers. I don't like that idea at all, and at least an 8th of my CDs are cardboard Jewel cases which I can't despose of.
 
I was actually thinking that maybe one day I could sell Apple all the work I've put into this project and they could finally market some stuff in Lossless.  I'd love to recoup my Single Power losses  I don't know if Apple would actually pay me LOL, but the design of my system I think is far more appealing (especially in classical music) than anything I've seen thus far from them or any other service which sells classical downloads.

Thanks for the info!  I had my CDs on bookshelves that took up a lot of space.  I think I am going to get a couple of those drawers and put all of my audio gear on top.  That looks really great.  Thanks so much for the links.  They are expensive but I think they are worth it.  12K CDs worth probably gets up there in $$!

About 90% of the music is ripped. But I still need a lot of time to Id3 tag and catalog the playlists in iTunes. Being that I'm not working as much right now, I can give a lot of time to it. If my schedule stays as is, I can be done in 7 to 8 months. Maybe even less if I sleep less. My goal is to have it completed for Can Jam 2011 and show up with it!

Wouldn't it be illegal to copy a CD, have two "copies" then and sell one of them ? Just an idea ...

It's not illegal to sell a store bought cd. I'm pretty sure every used cd that's ever been sold has been copied by the original owner. If I were to sell cdr copies that would be illegal but what I do with my own private investment which I own for 20 years is not copyright infringement.  Thank you for your concerns though

The  music industry has tried unsuccessfully  to get rid of the sale of used CDs, claiming that once you have sold your CDs, your files are no longer backups of items that you own so you have no right to possess them. Since you don't own the right to the original. your files are now illegal copies.
It is all bull. Enjoy your wonderful collection.

I don't understand this since every used sale always takes a hit in value.  I can semi-prove for the record that I am the original owner of almost every CD i own, I have kept a record of most of my stuff since i was 15 when I began to take photos of my purchases.  But anyway, nevermind that.........I don't think selling my collection would be considered illegal by anyone.  But it was never the point of this thread at all, and I'll be happy to remove that statement should it be brought up again.  I simply said it to say that I am happier navigating my library through all the work I've put in than the typical CD way.

How do you have time for all this organization?  Pictures of all your purchases, thousands on CD's purchased, with pictures, scanned covers, and meticulously archived with every bit of info.  And only 27?  I want to see what you've got done when you're 60!  You should get a job in Genetics cataloging DNA sequences or something.
