My friend has an issue with his laptop. His audio ports (headphone and/or speaker and mic ports) are broken. The only way he could connect his headphones to his laptop would be via USB. However, USB DACs are expensive. Is there an inexpensive ($~25 or less) solution that he might even want to use in the future (as in better than onboard audio)?

Alright. So I gave it and other USB Audio Controllers a look. Seems like TBAAM and the Chinese C-Media are the most popular ones?

Is the TBAAM worth the extra money over the C-Media?

if you need something for sub $25 bucks the difference will be unnoticeable since you are probably not using it to drive anything which will be able to tell the difference. Go for the $10 C-Media and call it a day.
