My First Time: Setting Up A Music Server

Thanks for the "Heads Up" on Monster.

If I did let this guy I know build me a file server, is it true I can place it in a different room where its out of sight and just leave it on? How far away can it be placed? And what, I just run like a long network cable to it?

How far away from what? Have you thought this through?
You need to play the music files to a DAC with something somewhere. You need to control the thing that plays the music files with something somewhere. The location of the file server is not a big deal.

I know you're trying to help, but you're actually confusing things because you seem to be misunderstanding the questions I'm asking.

I know I need to "play the music files to a DAC with something somewhere". And I also know I need to "control the thing that plays the music files with something somewhere". That is NOT what I was asking. The questions I'm asking are not that basic. So please give me a little credit and don't assume I'm a complete novice.

I already explained how close my PC, DAC, Amp and Preamp are to each other (see post # 9). So obviously I've "thought this through". You asked "How far away from what?" I thought I already explained this as well. I'm asking if I had a separate file server, if it can be placed in a different room from the PC? If so, how far away can the file server be from the PC? (doesn't those questions pretty much explain how far away from what?)

See below for definitions that may help you understand what it is I'm actually asking.

PC: the something somewhere I need to control. The something somewhere thing that plays the music files and sends data to the DAC.

File Server: A totally different something somewhere that stores music files and can be accessed remotely to stream music files to the PC (that other something somewhere).

Back to one of your earlier questions on file creation. I went through a complete digitalization this spring (over 500 gb). I used a Plextor and Pioneer, alternating between the two.

For software, I had used EAC for years but switched to DBPoweramp for this project. I upgraded to whatever that version is. This software does a great job in finding different sources for tagging and adding album art work. It is fast in converting to FLAC files. I especially liked it for classical music where the freedb database was not always the best and this software (with the upgrade) allowed me to choose between three to five different databases to get the best one.

My "file server" is just an external WD MyBook 1tb harddrive that sits on the old PC I use just for music. The whole thing sits in the hallway next to the amp stand, monitor and keyboard. I like using the external because, well, I don't have any choice as the PC has limited storage. Also, I can grab it and go in an emergency.

Well my file server is going to have to wait. The guy that was going to build it for me wants a little more than a "thank you" to assemble it for me. I don't expect anything for free, but he was the one who suggested the idea of a file server. After tonight, now I see why.

I understand guys very well. But there's cool ways and then there's totally sneaky ways of going about asking me. I aint stupid and can usually tell when someone is to trying to trick me into doing something. I'm just venting...

Thanks you guys, for all the help.
