My Computer is Now the Weakest Link

The WDTVLive isn't a bad option. It will play back using DLNA, from the internet, from shared folders and from attached HDDs (up to two). It'll play just about any file format except apple. It's a fanless design. And it'll also play HD movies/photos.

It has an optical out, so you can add the DAC of your choice. There's also an HDMI output for hooking up to home cinema amps.

I have one downstairs and, while there are a couple of minor issues, I'm actually quite pleased with it. I used to stream over my network using the foobar2000 UPnP media server to a PS3 but ending up getting hacked off with the noise and having to turn on the PC to listen to music.

One additonal benefit, of course, is the extra HDD attached to the WDTV Live is yet another backup of my music/photo/video files. As I rip files, I squirt them across the network to the WDTV Live.

For less than a ton, it's worth a look.
