My Samsung YH999 has survived EVERYTHING! Its been dropped down the stairs twice, thrown out of a car window onto the sidewalk once, dropped from 5 feet an uncountable amount of times, and has been landed on during a 70mph DH training incident while skiing. I would look into one of those just for the purpose of Boarding, only like 100 used on eBay. I have 2. For a more serious PMP, the Archos 604 should be taking a hit soon when the 605 is released. I have been gazing at the 604 for months now, and I will probably snag a 605 when its released.

You didn't pay with a credit card that has extended warranty protection did you?

I doubt i got an extended warranty. And i've still been lazy to go check it out :P

As for the looks of the nano, i thought the 1G looked MUCH better than the 2G IMO

I think the Zune might be better than a nano. From what I've read, Microsoft's firmware has many fail-safes to save the HDD from trauma. And where do you snowboard in Australia?

Im going for a 3 day trip to Thredbo. Which is SQUAT compared to the Canadian and US slopes ive been to :P

For a fraction of the cost of a new mp3 player you could just replace the hard drive. Go to iPodlounge or some support forum and check out replacement drives for your iPod, it takes a bit of work but you can find decent directions if you look hard enough. Once you open the case just take out the old hard drive and slip the new one in an restore and you're done. I only suggest this because a new iPod will have come out before the christmas holidays so that might be worth waiting for.

Might I suggest fixing your iPod. Unless there are like parts hanging out or the thing isn't turning on, I've yet to encounter an iPod that wasn't able to be revived, even after a drop. Almost every problem is fixable. For them to tell you nothing's possible might just be silly or lazy.

There is one quite expensive solution, so not sure if you want to hear this. It's also kind of complex.

1. Take the iPod in your dominant hand.
2. Make sure the case is still on the iPod
3. When it is booting up and showing signs of struggling, slam it on the edge of a desk or something. A dresser works.
3a. Once I slammed it on the floor to revive it.
3b. I have thrown it at my brother as well only to see it come back to life.*
4. Cry tears of joy if this well documented solution works for you too.

Best wishes ...

*Now really, I cannot be responsible for anyone coming to harm because you actually did this ...

hahaha i actually tried this, but i was scared i might damage more than the HD if i smacked it too hard :P

I also thought about replacing the HD, but for $100US i could get a 30gb ipod or i could add a little more onto that and get a brand new flash player,im fairly certain i wouldnt want another HD player unless it proves to be exemplary in terms of battery life and sturdiness.

I use to use my ipod to copy movies and anime from my friends but now that i have an external HD my ipod is only really there now to play music. Now since that is the case im hoping to go for a flash based system. Either that or a dam sturdy HD based player.

Like i said to Rise to the top, im still saving up my $$$ to either repair it or buy a new player, so in the mean time ill be doing research, and if need be i may even wait till a newer gen ipod or other device comes out.

Regardless, the Meizu m6 is sexy

-If you're afraid of doing damage, switch hands
-It does seem to help if you're frustrated at the point of impact, the science here is fuzzy
-I actually do finally think that new iPods are around the corner. But people have been saying that for about a year. At this point I would wait, since it does seem impending.

As an ipod owner... I know what youa re talking about.

Strictly, I have an ipod for the 3rd party support.

Apple treates customers poorly and the arrogant attitude does not help.
I know a former R&D VP from apple who helped develop the original iPod. He left because of their attitude and how they were cutting back on build quality (he did quit...actually has gone on to have a much bigger name after leaving the company). Seriously, you see a bunch of the older (1,2 Gen) ipods stilll working!

I would say Zune if you are looking to have some third pary support and better durability. The sound out of the headphone port is better too. (even though I use the dock for sound...) Pair that with a Toughskin from Speck and it is the most durable player on the market.

W/ my ipod I use an aluminum/leather hardcase and an evo3 iSkin. The iSkin makes the ipod hard to use...FYI

The screen on the use is far better and more useable (esp with album art).

There are a lot of good HDD players out there, even more Flash...(Meizu).

BTW: The ipod is designed currently to have a working time span of 18mo with normal use....
