Well after my 30gb Video ipod died from a drop im looking to get something new.

I brought my ipod to the mac store and they said the "sad ipod" symbol that shows up basically means the ipod too broke to repair, or not worth repairing anymore

Really annoys me since this ipod was treated with care and one fumble when i was getting it out of my pocket killed it

(sigh, at least the agent18 case kept it clean :P)

Now im deciding what to get next and i have to take into consideration that i'd like a player that'll survive a little bit more. Ill be taking it snowboarding so i want it to survive big tumbles. Im thinking 4/8gb Nano (flash based probably would take more punnishment), another 30gb Video for the storage size (i have absolutely NO use for the video function, Creative Zen Micro? (im not to familiar with these but ive heard good stuff about them).

Im geussing ill probably just get into an ipod again due to ease of use, and keeping with the older versions of itunes i dont have much trouble with the program itself.

What would you guys do? Also is there anything i can do with my ipod?? is there somewhere else i can get it fixed, or would it not be worth it

?

woops, forgot to respond to your question: The zune's rubber case can pretty much handle a lot of falls. It's really durable.

Thanks for the link. It seems that changing the hard drive isnt too hard. What kind of hard drives should i be looking to buy if i wanted to replace the hard drive?

EDIT: I found some sites selling the 30gb 1.8'' Hard drive for about $100-$115 US are these prices decent? I would have thought that they would be much cheaper considering the prices of HD's at the moment.

get a samsung yp-z5 for durability and it has porbably one of the best sound quality too, though not a lot of features... but i believe it only goes up to 4g

but on the durability, trust me on this one, i purposely tried to break it!!!ive used it for bout a year, its aluminum body was quite helpful, but definately cannot prevent scratches fully...
however, i threw this thing towards the ground, smashed it against my desk, drop it from 6 feet, submerged in water entirely(it said it doesnt have a water resistant case)... still worked 100%.... submerged with the power on, still works... opened the casing and poked at the curcuit board, still worked(although sometimes i cut the curcuit and had to turn it back on)
i was finally able to break it by haveing the player open up and dropped a few mls of water in it, screwing up the screen bad, and eventually the player itself...

there ya go, but the player is quite old, but still is sleek and comparable to other players present... maybe u can buy it online, not too sure for retail stores..

I havent purchased anything from itunes becuase of the stuff they do to the music you download.

I really like the idea of an 8gb Nano, but they are way over priced for their storage, only a little bit more gets me a 30gb Video. But then again i really would like a flash storage for the durability.

Sigh. Ill see if any good deals come up for 8gb's.

The 2G nano's are definatly tougher than the 1G but apparently aren't quite as good SQ wise (however i think i would be a rather small difference). Both are at my mums house so i really should see how much of a difference there is. Oh also i don't know if it makes any difference to you but the 1G is rockbox compatible whilst the 2G currently isn't. Is your video ipod out of the warranty period then?
