Based on what the OP posted as current music tastes, here is some I would suggest you try.

Dire Straits-any album -but maybe Alchemy (live)

Modest Mouse-Good News For People Who Love Bad News

I second the Bon Iver and Sufjan Stevens recommendations. Illinois is a great album, it's been on my playlist for the last month.

If you haven't already, check out Shearwater as well. Winged Life and Rooks are my favorite.

K-os from Canada is interesting too. He makes hiphop and combines this with all kinds of music. His first two album are really worth a listen. Pete Philly & Perquisite from the Netherlands do the same thing in a very original way.

Kyuss, their album 'Blues for the Red Sun' still blows me away. Of course the desert/stoner rock sound has to be to your liking.

Coldplay, their album 'A Rush Of Blood To The Head' silences me every time. I can't really categorize them and their sound. It just... amazes me.

Yeah I have a lot of the indie/folk music. My wife is into that kind of music so I have heard about everything I swear lol. But I did want to say I hadn't head Margot and the Nuclear So and So's and I am really enjoying them!
