I hate all the generalizations, but i agree that people in my generation do tend to prefer style over substance. But i dont think that the ipod did anything to music.
In fact i think the fact that people could download songs over p2p networks is what lead to the propagation of lower quality songs as these were faster to download.
I dont feel one can blame the ipod anymore than you can blame the cd player for the demise of vinyl the arguably better format.
