Good. The A900 is much better than the big bass Beyers, and it doesn't need an amp.

Portables:
Best open budget portables I know are the Koss KSC75. Or the Senn PX100, if you want something more convential. If you need isolation, AKG K81 is the actual old bull, really an impressive peace of gear.

In the 2006 models, there are also 32 ohm version. I recommend you get one of those. If you're interested in Beyers for gaming, you should probably get the DT770/32 or 80. People claim that the 80 ohm version of the 770 is the most balanced (least recessed midrange) out of all of the versions. The 32 ohm version should be easier to drive, though. I believe the 880 wouldn't do a very good job for gaming, as it's bright, and its lower end doesn't have as much of an emphasis. I'm not sure about the 990, though.
