MS1 vs. SR-225

I'd have to agree, with the 225's having more impact, tighter bass, an overall smoother midrange, and without the slight rolled off ms-1 highs.

I think the MS1 is supposed to be a tweaked SR-80, though most compare it favorably with the SR-125 (and usually say it is superior to it). That's why I'm wondering how it compares with the SR-225 that costs 2x as much.

The SR-225 falls right in the middle of the gap between MS1 and MS2 in terms of price.

I'd look for a nice used SR225. I believe AugustWest has a lightly-used one for sale for $150. I'd say it's worthy enough of $50 over the MS1...

However, the MS-1 is almost identical to SR-225 from the view of specifications....

I've owned both, but not at the same time. Relying on fuzzy memory, I don't think the MS1 does anything better than the SR225. Definitely with a decent source and amp, let alone the less than ideal situation of unamped off an iPod, I preferred the SR225. This is mostly because of the bottom end. Now do I think the SR225 is worth 175% the cost? No way. I like the SR225, RS1 and MS1 because of the top ends (why I can't take most of the other Grados anymore, including the SR325). The MS1 gets you over the audiophile sound without Grato highs hump. But generally I think the jump from MS1 to SR225 is about equal to SR225 to RS1. With great equipment, significant, but not dramatic. Without, less so.

People shouldn't *just* rely on specs or frequency graphs. The sound is more important.

Really? First many Head-Fiers don't like the SR325 because of brightness (preferring for instance the SR225). Second, has many gone this path to compare? I'm sure there are some of course, but I can't for instance remember many bringing this "upgrade" to SR325 up (though more MS1 to MS2 which makes sense). There are many more SR225 to SR325 comparisons. Of course though some will upgrade just for the superior (well for a Grado) build quality. Third, unless you have a really important point to make, can we stop the large green text?
