I've got the urge to move up the Grado foodchain. I really enjoy my MS-1's (with holed 414 pads) so I'm looking for a similar sound, but with more detail and extension, and a bit more headstage. For comparison, I found the SR60's a tad harsh on the high end.

After doing a lot of searches I've narrowed it down to the cans listed. I really think HF-1's are ideal but current selling prices have scared me away.

My goal is to get reasonably priced cans that my sources can catch up to as I upgrade (thinking the headfive amp and a DAC

) but for now I mostly use my Iaudio U2 and PA2V2 with high bitrate/VBR files.

Musical tastes are rock/prog rock/instrumental hiphop/ambient/folk acoustic.

Let the voting begin!

If you like the MS-1, you'll love the MS2. Heck, some people like it better than the RS1, it could end up as your "end of the line" can. It's also a fantastically built headphone.

I've got the MS-1s as well(luv 'em!)and I'm kinda stuck between going up to,(LAST STOP!!)either MS-2s or RS-2!

Back and forth, back and forth, back and forth.....I guess I really like the number "TWO"!!

So I almost voted for MS-2, but not quite.

Edit: Ok I voted for MS-2 cuz it IS a possibility, after all

But shucks; for a few bucks more I can get a dandy padded headband and lighter weight along with even more of my fav sound!

But I really, really like the high tech looks of the aluminum and more reasonable price!

But compared to the RS-1, the RS-2 is also reasonably priced, and I really, really like the traditional old world look of, and weight savings, of the wood.

........arrrrrrrrgh!!

Yeah..left that one off. Budget wise, even the RS1's are a stretch for me.

Edit: Maybe RS2's

Having just upgraded from a pair of SR-125s to SR-325i's, I'd imagine the MS-2i's would be a pretty good choice. These do weigh a bit more, but at least the ones with the wider headband - which is all I've tried - are just as comfortable as the SR-125s. Then again, I'm using flat pads instead of bowls.

RS-2's would have been nice, but they pop up for sale oh so very seldom. Decided it wasn't worth the wait. I also wouldn't bother with the HF-1s at their current (and upcoming) market price(s). They propably wouldn't be what you're looking for anyhow... noticeably more mellow than other Grado 'phones.

edit:

As a sidenote, I also used the 414 pads on my SR-125s, if that helps any.

Just FYI, the RS2 and MS2i offer different flavors of the Grado sound. I think you can check around for the exact specifics there... I shouldn't comment on the RS2 because I've only heard it for a few minutes at a meet.

Excellent point well taken.

I am familiar with the sound of MS-1 and understand that MS-2 sounds much the same........cool!

And after exhaustive(but lottsa fun!) forum searches, I think.....

That I understand that the RS-2 has a sound kinda like "what I think I am looking for" but it IS still an unknown quantity.....not cool.

MS2i is pretty much a sure bet.

RS-2 still has a lot of research, but most of what I've read about it says it could be a winner as well!! Many of the same characteristics and attributes as the MS2i.

Yup! The hunt sometimes is as much fun as the kill!!

If it's for the same price (or very little difference), I think I'd go for the RS2. Even if there was not much sonic difference. The wood alone is already a balance-tipper (unless you prefer the metal look of the MS2).
