This study makes no mention of the environmental impacts of storing the music on desktop hard drives and portable players. Both products take enormous amounts of energy to manufacture.

Really? How much?

Well, think of all the energy it takes to make the metal chassis and platters of a hard drive as well as the many microchips on the controller PCB. Digital downloads take up space on hard drives, increasing the demand for them, so more of them are made. Then factor in the long term energy usage (as Uncle Erik talked about) of running the hard drive.

It is the same thing with portable players, only replace the metal chassis and platters of the hard drives with the very complex LCD screens of the players.

The study was interesting but it did not factor in the points that some of us have brought up. These points are not trivial, and if factored in, the benefits of downloads would be greatly diminished if not negated.
