Hey all,
I'm thinking of getting my 13 year old niece an MP3 player for Christmas. What would you folks reccomend? I figured I'd order her a nice set of PX 100's or 200's to go along with it too. I need something inexpensive, rugged, and portable. Any ideas? Headphone combos?

See ya,
Nick

I would "recommend" you ask in the portable audio section: http://www4.head-fi.org/forums/forum...?s=&forumid=22

More constructively:
What sort of price are you considering? If you are looking at bottom-mid range, you might think about one of the 1.5 GB models that have come on the market recently - e.g. Creative Muvo 2 ('squared'). This size of capacity makes it a bit more useful and economic than players with flash memory that are almost the same price but have at most about a third of the storage capacity. How much music do you think she would want to store, dozens of hours or just a handful of albums?

EDIT. I re-read your specification. Rugged and portable, Creative also have a similar model, the Muvo "squared" X-Trainer, meant for sports use. But, all players are portable to a degree, again it depends if she'd want to be able to use it while playing sports or just walking about. I think the general consensus is that if you're using a hard-disc player then you need to go easy, but you can pretty much jump off a mountain with a flash player.

Perhaps the kind moderators could move this thread.

But on to your question. I'm not sure what "inexpensive" means to you (some folks just have deeper wallets than us ordinary folks

) but here are my recommendations:

- MPIO DMK (128 MB) MP3 player. ~$100. Heard lots of good things about this player. Cool titanium silver/ titanium blue design. Looks like it can withstand some knocks. Very compact.

- MPIO FL (128 MB) MP3 Player - ~$120. Bought one of these for my friend's b-day. Very compact and sleek design. Polished front surface Reminiscent of the IPOD mirror surface. Memory card slot for expansion. FM radio and microphone for voice recording. The sound is quite good too; good amount of tight bass. But might not be as rugged as the DMK.

Amazon sells them as cheaply as any other sites I've seen. Here the link

The PX100 would do just fine. Inexpensive, tough (they even have the hard case), and sound that people compare to the KSC35's. I'd recommend the PX100 over the KSC35's if only because she'll most likely prefer the styling of the Senns.

iRiver IFP-180t - sound quality awesome and it has good synergy with PX100 and PX200.

BTW, you're either a really nice uncle or she's got you wrapped around her little finger.

I was thinking in the $150 range. I like the sound of that MPIO FL. The radio is a nice feature she might like.
