As a side note, check out the ENOB (effective number of bits) versus dynamic range/SNR table from this site... For 16-bit material, the maximum possible dynamic range/SNR is 98.1 dB. For 24-bit material, it's 146.2 dB (!). I'm not aware of any DAC that has 146.2 dB of dynamic range, so I guess the full potential of 24-bit recordings is still untapped.

The Crystal CS4398 24 bit DAC dynamic range spec is 120 dB. We're getting there! Although you can forget it if the post DAC stage and amp stage is not up to scratch.

Thanks to all who share their thoughts and inputs. I've learned that most DAPs now appear to use DACs with oversampling of at least 32x (the delta-sigma ones), with the exception of embedded DACs in side a multi-media processor chip....

Yep... It's in my E-MU 1212M. Sounds pretty good.

The DAC with the best SNR I've found has been the Burr-Brown 1792 and 1794 family (including the PCM1792 / DSD1792 and PCM1794 / DSD1794), all rated at 132 dB mono (

), ~127 dB stereo at 2V RMS.

One of the reasons that the Zhaolu D2.5 external DAC became so popular within a short period of time was that the makers promised a PCM1794 DAC upgrade, but they stopped with the CS4398.

All the multimedia "system-on-a-chip" DAP processors I've ever used or heard of also integrate sigma-delta DACs. I really doubt you could find an integrated or discrete audio DAC anywhere today that doesn't employ sigma-delta technology. The technology is simply that ubiquitous.
