I have an older Sony mini disc recorder that I can plug a stereo mic into and record. It did a pretty decent job, but now it's getting time to replace it.

I'm looking at the Creative Zen V. Will the line input work as well as the old Sony with just plugging the mic in?

Any comments on the recording quality?

I have a Creative Zen plus.

The sound quality is mediocre. I used to have a mini disc recorder and remember the sound being much better, sorry I do not have both on hand to compare directly.

The iriver H1xx and H3xx players can do line-in recording. To WAV or mp3. Or using Rockbox even more formats I think. Its been a v.long time since Iv used this feature, but I think the irivers are considered to have v.good sound recording quality?

OK, but if mic takes power from player's plug only (no external energy source), you need mic-in, not line-in

no idea what that is, as i've never used line-in, but all the Cowon products have Line-in listed as a feature.

Any iPod running the Rockbox firmware has recording capabilities. I can confirm it works with iPods, I assume it also does for the other players that you can run Rockbox on.

I recommend using Rockox anyways, just for the wide degree of settings it opens up. (Crossfeed, grapical EQ, high-pass/low-pass filters, etc, etc, etc)

Of course, iAudio players have line-in, but they can't run external mic without external power supply

So what you're saying is I need a phantom power supply to record from a mic to the line in on the mp3 player:

Something like this?

eBay: PHANTOM POWER SUPPLY FOR ELECTRET MICROPHONES (item 110133531576 end time Jul-30-07 07:02:41 PDT)

Exactly, unless you have mic in. It's lot better to have mic in in this case, having yet another device in your pocket isn't practical, especially when you for example want to record concert: having player and power supply could be annoying
Also, irivers with mic in mentioned above have brilliant recording quality, so if I were you, I'd pick up IFP799 or IFP899.
