some music cds use 5.1 sound, if I ripped these songs to mp3, then burned them to disk, would they still have these capabilities? (I do realise that it's redundant to do this, but I'm talking about burning the mp3s onto a disk in MP3 format.) Or do any mp3s that are downloaded have 5.1 channels. If not, what is the channel capability of an mp3

Ony two channel capable fromt he specs. There are some hacks for multichannel audio but there is not defined standard as I understand it.

Also, those 5.1 CDs are likely not redbook CDs. I suspect they are probably either multi-channel SACDs or, mor likely, DVD-Audio. Both of which use encryption. Ripping htem digitally will prove to be quite the challenge.
