Fur Elise...surprised no ones said it yet

right now for me is pecabel cannon, been trying to pound the piano version for a week or two now, i practically know the first 2 measures by heart (and the broken chords repeat in the same pattern, different iterations but ya)

and the FFVII battle song has been in the series from then on, id know that one if i was nearly deaf

Darn tootin'. Another same era staple would be Soft Cells' version of "Tainted Love." Anyone with any familiarity knows what those two chopped trumpet bursts mean.

Another I'll add is "Don't Fear the Reaper" by Blue Oyster Cult.

I think an easily recognizable opening may be one of the markers of a great tune. In that vein

the opening piano in the Who's Love Reign Over Me

the opening synth in Devo's Whip It
