I think this could be quite interesting

do you know those songs where only the opening chords are needed for an entire generation to know the words that follow? that make a crowd go wild before a single word is sung?

I can come up with two for now, but I bet some of you guys remember a couple more:

Simon & Garfunkel: Sounds Of Silence
Metallica: Nothing Else Matters

Pink Floyd - "Money", "Another Brick in the Wall Pt. 2"...(and they should know "Echoes")...

Led Zeppelin - "Stairway to Heaven", "Livin' Lovin' Maid", "Heartbreaker"...

Rolling Stones - "Angie", "Heartbreaker", "Paint It Black", "Sympathy for the Devil"...

Eric Clapton - "Leyla", "Cocaine"...

Blue Oyster Cult - "(Don't Fear) the Reaper", "Godzilla"

Edgar Winter Group - "Frankenstein" (well, alright, not the words necessarily, but they should know how it goes), "Free Ride"

Rick Derringer - "Rock and Roll Hootchie Koo"

Golden Earring - "Radar Love", "Twilight Zone"

Lynyrd Skynyrd - "Free Bird"

Yeah, this is the first day in several weeks that I've had to read through Head-Fi thoroughly; and this is one of the many threads that caught my eye, and one that can be answered quickly.

thought of another one:

Favourite Things. be it Coltrane's version or the one from The Sound Of Music (love that movie!) or whatever other versions there may be, it's incredibly recognizable!

Santana:"Black Magic Woman"

Temptations: "My Girl"

Marvin Gaye: "I Heard It Through The Grapevine"

Rolling Stones:"Satisfaction"

Otis Redding:"Sitting on The dock of The bay"

Joan Jett and The Blackhearts: "I Love Rock and Roll"

Chuck Berry: " Johnny B.Goode"

I could name a thousand more but I know that nearly everyone knows these few and the notes come to mind by just reading the titles.

There's a story here...
I went to one of the private schools here...hence..I was a junior and the seniors had set up their speakers and amps on our courtyard. As the last bell rang before lunch, we(this was an all male school) were stopped in our tracks as we exited our classrooms to the beginning of Van Halen's first album. We rushed out only to be greeted by that veering guitar sound followed by the thump thump thump of some cool bass. what the hell?...Eddie began to play his riff........then distortion....apparently, the hot Hawaiian sun had warped some dude's Van Halen album....when the album folded, we all cheered.

some other good first notes or riffs:
the cars "let's go"
rush "working man"
bruce "thunder road"
steely dan "aja" okay sorry...if you are a fan..then you know all of the dan's songs.
the cure "just like heaven"
styx "babe"
triumph "hold on"
eagles "hotel california"
devo "working in a coalmine"
police "roxanne"
someone stop me!

the bass drone at the beginning of Das Rheingold (the low e-flat then the open fifth... just.... gets me everytime) then of course there is the little, 8 HORNS, "riff"
biggrin.gif

the high bassoon at the beginning of Le sacre du printemp

the high 8 part violin split at the beginning of Lohengrin

oh yeah, and all guitar/keyboard parellel unison/thirds/sixth between petrucci and DM theater keyboardists
